Will Star Wars IX be Nominated for Best Visual Effects?

If there’s one area of this film that we can be certain will earn Star Wars an Academy Award nomination, it’s this one. Dating all the way back to Star Wars IV: A New Hope, this franchise has been nominated for Best Visual Effects.

In fact, every “Skywalker saga” of Star Wars films has earned a nomination for this category. Unfortunately, only the first three films actually won the award. The second set of trilogy films from 1999 – 2005, lost out to The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings films.

The Force Awakens was nominated, but lost to Ex Machina and The Last Jedi lost out to Blade Runner 2049. Nevertheless, you can confidently pencil in The Rise of Skywalker as a nominee for the Best Visual Effects category.

Will John Williams be Nominated for Best Original Score?

• Yes (-167)
• No (+120)

John Williams will go down as one of the greatest composers of all time. He’s been nominated for 51 Academy Awards dating all the way back to 1967. Williams has created scores that have left an impression on pop culture with such films like Jaws, Superman, E.T., and the Star Wars franchise.

Williams has won this Oscar on five occasions:

• In 1971 for Fiddler on the Roof
• In 1975 for Jaws
• In 1977 for Star Wars: A New Hope
• In 1982 for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
• In 1993 for Schindler’s List

Most of the Star Wars’ films have earned John Williams a nomination in this category. However, only the first film won the Oscar for Best Original Score.

For this bet, I’m shocked that the odds are this low. Wager your entire Star Wars collection, kids’ college funds, and your house that Williams will get nominated for the category of Best Original Score.

Will Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker be Nominated for Best Film Award?

Before we answer this question, let’s take a look at how the previous eight Star Wars films have done:

• In 1977, Star Wars was nominated, but lost to Annie Hall
• Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi weren’t even nominated.
• The entire second trilogy of Star Wars films wasn’t even close to being nominated for the Best Film.
• The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were also left out of his category in 2015 and 2017.

As you can see, only the original Star Wars film earned a nomination for the Best Film category and it lost out to a Woody Allen film that nobody even remembers. Not even the power of the force can help The Rise of Skywalker get nominated for this category.

Take the “no” option for this bet even though there’s no value.

Will Star Wars Episode IX Win at Least One of the Four Main Acting Oscars?

Alec Guinness was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 50^th Academy Awards for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. He lost out to Jason Robards who played Dashiell Hammett in Julia.

Since Guinness’ nomination, no actor or actress in a Star Wars film has earned a nomination in any of these four main acting categories. Not only will Star Wars IX not win one of the four main acting Oscars, I highly doubt they will even earn a nomination in these categories. Go with “no” for this bet.

Will J.J. Abrams be Nominated for an Oscar for Best Director?

• Yes (+600)
• No (-1429)

Once again, the only time a Star Wars film earned a nomination for the Best Director award was in 1977 when George Lucas earned a nomination for Star Wars: A New Hope. He lost out to Woody Allen for his film Annie Hall. Since then, no other Star Wars director has come close to earning a nomination.

With that said, I highly doubt that J.J. Abrams will earn a nomination for this award. Despite having a successful career, Abrams has never been nominated for an Academy Award before and I don’t see it happening for this film.

The Rise of Skywalker Opening Weekend Box Office

For decades, films have been measured on how successful they are by the numbers they generate during their opening weekend at the box office. It’s a measuring stick for just how excited the general population was in seeing a film. It’s also a good indicator of how well a film will do in it the theaters.

With that said, let’s take a look at the Top 10 all-time grossers for domestic opening weekend at the box office to get a better idea of how well The Rise of Skywalker might do:

As you can see in the chart above, Marvel films crushed it as both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game smashed box office records. They’re followed by the last two Star Wars films: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

The Force Awakens was the first film in this third and final trilogy. It generated a lot of hype as longtime fans were excited to see how the story continued from the original trilogy. The Last Jedi was going to feature more of Luke Skywalker and longtime fans just couldn’t get enough of the original cast.

With this film being the final installment of the “Skywalker saga,” I expect it to do really well at the box office. With The Mandalorian creating a massive buzz on Disney+, Star Wars fever is starting to grow and I expect it will fuel additional interest in the new film next month.

I don’t see The Rise of Skywalker topping either Avengers films, but there’s a strong chance it could beat out The Force Awakens (+170) and The Last Jedi (-105).

Both betting options, 3^rd highest and 4^th highest, offer great value. The safe play is 4^th highest at -105 odds, but the better return is with the 3^rd highest at +170 odds. It would be fitting for this film to end up surpassing the previous two Star Wars films.
